What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. It emphasizes technique and leverage over size and strength.

Founded by the Gracie family, BJJ has revolutionized martial arts by proving that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using proper technique, leverage, and submissions.

At IronFist MMA, we teach traditional Gracie Jiu-Jitsu with modern competition techniques for self-defense, fitness, and sport.

About Belt Progression

BJJ belt promotion is based on technical knowledge, skill demonstration, mat time, and character. Unlike many martial arts, there are no belt tests—promotions are awarded when the instructor recognizes the student's readiness.

Each belt has 4 degrees (stripes) that signify progress within that rank. Black belts can earn up to 9 degrees over a lifetime of training.
